Beginnings: Catherine McGuire

Catherine McGuire, who would later marry Charles Robert Garrett, was the daughter of Spencer Jackson (Jackie) McGuire (1820 or 1822 – 1892) and Barzilla (Mary) Bray (1819 – 1878). Catherine was one of nine children and was born on June 30, 1846 in or near Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana.

Her parents were married in Marion Co., Indiana in 1842 and were living with Spencer’s parents at the time of the 1850 census.

It is not known when the McGuire family traveled to Iowa, though it must have been after 1855 and before 1860. The Clarke Co. census of 1860 does not list Lucinda or Annias; these two children did not survive to be recorded by the census. The oldest son Joseph had died in 1850.
